Estefana Trevino de Cisneros
( by Sara Ayarzagoitia Contreras)

Estefana Trevino was born in Reynosa, Mexico on December 26, 1845. Her parents were Julian Trevino and Josefa Tovar. She was our families' great-grandmother.

Estefana married Pedro Cavazos Garcia on October 25, 1872 in Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas at La Paqrrogia de Brownsville. His parents were Favian Garcia and Maria Bartola Cavazos. Estefana and Pedro made their home in Brownsville and were blessed with the following children:

1. Maria Dolores Trevino Garcia b. 1869 d. 1947 m. Porfirio Villarreal Ayarzagoitia b. 1873 d. 1954

3. Rafael Trevino Garcia b. 1874 d. 1937 m. Ramona Davila
4. Amalia Trevino Garcia b. 1878 d. 1962 never married

On or about 1878, Pedro died in an accident at Campo Verde at the King Ranch 3 Norias. He was on horse back roping a calf and got caught on the rope. His injuries were extensive and complications from the injury caused his death. Pedro's death was a hardship for Estefana. The children were very young. She now was a widow with four children to raise. Amalia was an infant. Estefana married Francisco Asis Cisneros on August 28, 1878 in Cameron County, Texas. Together, they raised the first family and brought into this world two boys:

1. Manuel Maria Cisneros b. 1880 d. 1918 m. Maria Hilaria Calvillo b. 1887 d. 1932
2. Francisco Javier Cisneros v. 1885 d. 1960 m. Adalina Salinas b. 1870 d. 1976

Francisco's livelihood was in accounting. He lived at the sites of employment until he completed the accounting assignments and audits for his employers. He was constantly on the move from site to site and was away from his family doing his work.
Estefana's second marriage was short-term. Francisco was shot and killed by an assailant. It is believed that he is interred at Las Rucias Cemetery in Willamar, Willacy County. Estefana was a widow for the second time. She decided to move to Hidalgo County. She purchased Los Vergeles Ranch in Hidalgo County to live with her children, Rafael, Jose, Amalia Garcia and Francisco Javier, and Manuel Maria Cisneros. Maria Dolores was already married to Porfirio Villarreal Ayarzagoitia on July 30, 1892 and lived away from home.
Estefana was a remarkable, independant and courageous woman with many skills. Quilt making, mattress making, sewing, embroidery, recipes for herbal teas and food canning were some of her skills, but she was blessed with the skill of childbirthing. She was in the practice of midwifery. Estefan helped and advised women about all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth care. She was consulted by family members, and families in the Hidalgo and neighboring counties for her wisdom in maternity care. She was also a spiritual teacher. Estefana offered support and encouragement to families with family problems and issues of family life. She helped families with herbal teas and prayer healing.
Estefana died on July 26, 1919 at Los Vergeles Ranch in Hidalgo at the young age of seventy-three. She is interred at La Piedad One Cemetery in Raymondville, Texas. Her gravestone reads: Stefana T. de Cisneros, Faecio 16 de Agosto de 1919 a la edad de 73 anos.
