Old building
in San Perlita* |
The
"Twin Palms" on Garcia Road outside Raymondville |
*This building, GARCIA BROTHERS, was a grocery store built in 1946 by Federico
Garcia, for his sons, Diego Garica and Roberto Garcia. Roberto had just returned
from England, where he was serving in the army. Federico's son, Uvaldo, delivered
groceries to the labor camps and area ranches in an old army jeep. At that
time, hundreds of people came from Mexico to pick the cotton grown in the
area. The store closed in 1951, as other pickers replaced those from Mexico.
At this time, San Perlita had a population of about four-hundred people. Stores
of that era included Moore Grocery, Lozano Grocery, Hudson Dry Good Store,
a Post Office, Bob Rule Gas Station, Smith Feed Store, Heath Gas Station,
a theater, and several beer houses.
